A Sustainable Possibility

Since the industrial revolution, social progress has been measured by material affluence. Living well has evolved into a constant flow of goods and services delivered conveniently at low cost, BUT the potential for continued growth depends on continuous expansion and this balloon is at a braking point.

Renewable energy systems may sound like a viable solution to our social dilemma, but if the old energy regimes are maintained we are simply exchanging energy resources while leaving the basic social configuration intact. A sustainable “solar age” will depend more on making a connection with the sun and less on making a connection with Exxon or General Dynamics.

Large corporations can not prevent individuals from using renewable resources but renewable energy research grants are unbalanced to the point of destroying the opportunities they were designed to create and the ‘flavor’ of green education continues to supports the energy regimes of the past.

Radical communities are doing their best to operate outside of those systems they wish to change by building foundations for change through a Do-it-Yourself ethic way of living and a walking to work as an alternative to driving.
Local food distribution schemes, and local broadcasting stations, with local libraries, video networks, public kitchens, and online message boards, as well as gardens, childcare co-ops, bicycle lanes and farmers’ markets could form strong social-material-psychological bonds, that are the bedrock for developing alternative ways of living. BUT before social transformation takes place individuals must learn to become leaders in the sea of Mesmerized followers.

Environmental problems must be framed and connected to the social systems that create them.”… A twentieth century visionary by the name of Buckminster Fuller once said that our greatest problem is that we are the problem. To be objective Mr. Fuller suggested that we stand on the Moon and observe our planets resources disappear as the human population expands beyond sustainability. The industrial revolution, guided by the “hand of greed” is the basis for our modern capitalist civilization, but where do we go from here. We have been lulled into complacency by TV and mass produced products, We have handed over the rains of control to big business and big government, and our trust has been betrayed. We have lost much of our freedom to but we still have the opportunity to take control of our own lives and rediscover the value of sustainability.

Transformation

There is an old saying that goes something like this: The one thing we can always rely on not to change is change. We live in a positive entropy universe in which mater and energy are continually expanding. Hot objects cool down energy dissipates and the universe becomes homogonous. High energy molecules and atoms combine or split to become low energy molecules. Suns are made by fusing hydrogen atoms together to make Helium and by releasing energy that disipates into the void we call universe. Suns also produce other elements that combine to form meteriors and astorides and comets that eventually get together to form what we call planets. If the orbital motion of a planet is too slow it will spiral into its sun, but since most suns loose mater faster than they gain mater the gravitational attraction between sun and planet decrease so we could might expect planets to move farther and farther away from their sun with the passage of time.
ANYHOW lets come back down to earth for a momnent and look at time from a more human perspective. How long have we been around.

ideas

I live in a sea of ideas that are continually struggling for expression. Some writers say that ideas are the foundation of their craft and I'm sure they are, but too many un corodinated ideas just add to a pile of clutter..
If you're lucky and catch a few before they slip through your fingersn you may be able to find a place for them, but don't wait too long because ideas are as etherial as the night sky.
ANYHOW (this is where I zoom off into a new direction and lose almost everyone, including myself, so hang on to the train)
Why do we do the things we do? Why do we read dribble? Why do we write dribble? Who do we believe? Who or what is our guiding light? Do we believe in ... "How do I know? The Bible tells me so." Do we believe in stock predictions, our parents, our teachers, our religious leaders, the Pope, our government, our children or just everyone with a letter after his name. How do we make decisions? How do we choose from the sea of ideas? The truth is inside each of us all we have to do is wade through the clutter of ideas and find it.

OK this is where I throw in my observations of truth.. Truth is something that remains constant. We will never know absolute truth. We can only get better at predicting future events based on our personal experience. Science is based on the ability to repeat an experiment over and over again with the same results. The concept of gravety is based on the mysterious attraction between bodies of matter. The attractive force between objects is based on the mass of objects as well as the distance between them. Gravitational attraction is a predictable phenomena that may be calculated although it may never be fully understood.

We rely on the myths of literature, social interaction and other observations to assemble our collective unconscious and interact with our environment.
That was a mouthful... I'm sure you know what I mean and I'm sure you can't wait for me to get to the point. I do have a point, believe it or not, but it just slipped away...
Don't worry though it will come back if it has any value. It always does. Just to be patient.

I guess the thing I am trying to say has to do with our struggle to be human, find truth and find out where we belong in the great scheme of things. This is of course something that everyone must find for themselves, but I'll give you a hint. The answer to life the universe and everything is not 42. An understanding of the truth does not rely on a single observation. The universe is the same if we view it through a microscope or telescope.

Maybe this solar workshop will shed light on how we might better fit in.

path to nowhere

Every blog must start some place and I guess this is where this one will start. I just hope that this blog eventually finds direction. Going around and around is OK for now. It's sort of learning to ride a bike in a circular parking lot, but I am hopeful that this bike will eventually take me to wonderful unexplored placed of the human or perhaps unhuman mind.
What is a mind anyhow other than a plate full of jello with a little salt sprinkled on top. Is this what you want to here, a mind gallivanting around cyberspace without direction and objectivity, just a random collection of words with a few punctuations thrown in to avoid the monotony of it all.

Is communication just an overrated art?
Does anybody really communicate?
Does anyone ever listen?
Are we no less than a flock of Kaydids screeching at the nigh?
Wouldn't it be nice just to have one nice screech that someone hears?
